The appearance of this lumber-laden swamp hauler during the coldest days of winter is an occasion for celebration for the Ren’Kai. Its arrival to the boggy marshes from the timber regions far upriver guarantees that there will be warm hearths and lively cooking pits throughout the frosty days ahead. After festooning the barge in twinkling lanterns, Ren’Kai woodcutters encourage excited youth to jump aboard and ride atop the piles of logs as they float into port.[1]
