From an armor standpoint, we cut armor sets up into many different pieces. These pieces can sometimes be used as part of other sets, that may include helmets, wrists, gloves etc. So while you will not see an achievable white version of the corvid castigator set in the game for example, you may see its shoulder piece used in another set, or its leggings, or wrist piece used in another set (not every piece as to form the whole set, but perhaps a couple pieces). This would be difficult to notice at first glance, due to the material, texture and color variation used, but this modular approach to content creation makes achieving a wide variety of looks achievable for an MMORPG of our size.[6]Steven Sharif

Pre-order packs

Pre-order packs were available from the Tienda cosmética up until they ended on January 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific.[25][23]

We offer cosmetics for players who wish to support the project early. The exclusive nature of the limited availability is something I think collectors value. If you buy cosmetics as an MMO player, I know I enjoyed if the cosmetic is rare and not every girl at the party is wearing the same dress. In addition, these cosmetics are used to populate the world through NPC variants and color/texture changes so their offering aligns with our production schedule. The good thing about these packs is they contain no P2W advantages and there is no box cost, so from a mechanics standpoint you do not need to buy them to excel in the game on launch. And also, there are comparable and subjectively more grand cosmetics achievable in game as well.[10]Steven Sharif

Dyes

Dyes in Ashes of Creation may refer to:

Dye usage

Dyes are one-time use items that apply a cosmetic color change across all dyeable items that are equipped on a player's character (paper-doll).[30][31][32]

  • Two dye channels are provided per character that together influence up to 50% of the gear that is equipped by that character.[30]
    • The first dye channel is for lower grade dyes that influence 10 to 20% of armor appearance on that character.[30]
    • The second dye channel is for higher tier dyes that influence up to 30% of armor appearance on that character.[30]
  • The original design allowed individual items to be dyed with different dyes.[31]
One of the things that we want to do- again talking about player agency- is we want to give them the ability to change the appearance of their armor sets that they're wearing; and the way we've approached the dye solution is through a channeled system. We have a two channel dye system where the first channel is a lower grade dye that it has influence over between 10 to 20 percent of your overall armor appearance; and then the second channel dye is a higher tier dye that you have to acquire; and by doing so you can influence the remaining thirty percent- up to thirty percent of that armor appearance: So up to a total of fifty percent influence that can occur across all the pieces that you wear. Now one unique approach to the way we're doing this dye system is we're not allowing individual dyes to be applied on individual items, but instead we keep a cohesion across the set by applying that dye channel to your character; and when you equip a piece with your overall character it will assume that dye channel from your paper doll. So you apply the dyes to your character and when you equip a piece of item it will take that dye and it will influence the channel over that particular piece so that it comes into alignment. And what the reason that we're doing that is there's a lot of options with regards to customization for your character appearance, whether it be through transmog, through costumes, through mixing and matching sets and pieces that you can wear; and what we want to avoid is the rainbow effect where these pieces do not look good together and it creates the clown that's walking down the street.[30]

The Kickstarter dyes are sets of unique colors that are not obtainable by players who did not participate in Crowdfunding. These dyes are not usable as normal dyes are. Instead they are used to override the color of another dye obtained in game.[33]

  • They are assigned to a character from a user's account management page.[33]
  • They do not expire, so they may be used to continually override dye colors.[33]
  • Once a dye has been overridden it becomes a bound dye to that character, so the colors cannot be sold for in-game benefit.[33]
  • When an item is sold or transferred, color changes are reverted.[33]

Dyeable items

Dyes only affect tagged portions of dyeable armor or cosmetic items.[34]

  • The dyeability of costumes depends on the specific costume.[34]

Outside of wanting to keep maybe some identity from a lore perspective; for example if you have like a white lion's suit of armor, you may not want that white lion suit of armor to be black or blue. So, it's possible. It depends on the costume itself.[34]Steven Sharif

Seasonal cosmetics

There are seasonal cosmetics in Ashes of Creation.[21][36]

  • Seasonal cosmetics can be obtained in-game.[21]

Armor appearance

We want to be realistic with the application of particular types of armor, such as plate armor. In this regard for the different sexes there's a fine line that has to be drawn between accentuating the form of the sex as well as making it somewhat realistic and actually applicable to the environment.[37]Steven Sharif

  • Armor will not be overly sexual in appearance.[37][39]
    I'm more of the mind that it wouldn't really serve a purpose to have bikini plate armor, just in like reality, if you're going to have armor, it should be protective. I think from a fashion statement is enjoyable for some people, but it's a an immersive issue.[38]Steven Sharif
    • Some armor and costumes will be more revealing than others, but there will not be nudity in the game.[41]
    There might be sliders, but there are not gonna be naked sliders.[41]Steven Sharif
Each race is getting its custom geo pieces, which then will share thematic components such as color palette, attachments, design filigree. Those types of things will get shared across the geo but generally you're going to see unique races with unique geo.[45]Steven Sharif
  • Cosméticos can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[13]
  • Hair will likely be masked if helmet display is toggled on.[52]

Items on back and belt

Players can set the appearance priority for the items they wish to show in their Back and Belt slots.[55][56][57]

  • Only one item can show at a time, and that is determined by player choice.[53]

There is a great variation that's going to be available from a character standpoint when creating your character, especially around the face. Whether it be the shape of the jawline, the cheeks, the ears, the nose, the lips. We want there to be a lot of room for people to manifest their own identity, to role play how they want to from an appearance standpoint. So, because of that, we have to have a spectrum you can exist on. There will be a lot of hair variants you can do, body art tattoos that you can apply. You'll be able to play with the scales of the facial structure, the bones, the height, width, the body fat percentage. You'll be able to add body hair on different parts of the body. If you want to have hair on your feet, you can dial that up.[69]Steven Sharif

There's going to be constraints to the sliders, so that was one of those big questions as work began on the character creator: How much agency do you want to allow pulling like the lower lip all the way down in this weird deformed look, or having like [an] offset cheek that's just asymmetrical to the side of the face. There's not going to be the ability or agency to create those types of weird character things. However you will have the ability to move, slide, change, grow, decrease all those components, but they'll be kept in a more reasonable and presented way in the same sense you won't be able to change the appearance of the dwarven, nor the Dünir or the Niküan races to, in my opinion, create what would be traditionally considered a Loli character.[73]Steven Sharif

Skins

Racial skins

Racial skins are cosmetics that enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[82][83][84][85]

  • Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[90]
  • Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[85]

Freehold skins

Sunbeam's Remembrance medium homestead cosmetic freehold building skin.[91]

After you build your house, you can build other buildings on your Freehold. Each building needs the blueprint to start the process. If you have a cosmetic skin you want to use on a building, this is used after placing the blueprint. Once this has been placed, the building will be shown in a non-functional, construction state. Players will need to provide the required materials needed to complete the building construction, for each building on their Freehold.[92]

Freehold building skins were offered as Kickstarter and El verano de la financiación rewards and were available in pre-order packs.[93][94][95][96][97]

Cosmetics that we have sold as part of different packs throughout the past- our pre-order system: Those cosmetics are split into three primary categories: housing, artisanship, and business; and we will have a breakdown that we're going to be releasing of the cosmetics that have come previously and which categories they exist in, but players will have the option to override the appearance of a blueprint that exists within one of those categories with an associated cosmetic skin; and that is obviously not just something that can be purchased through the pre-order system, but also can be achieved in-game as well- our cosmetics that can be applied to specific building types. And we don't get as granular where, let's say, you might have a shrine cosmetic, and you have, let's say, a blacksmith building that you wouldn't be able to apply the shrine to the blacksmith building. If the shrine exists in the artisanship lane you can apply it to any artisanship type building, but not to a house or business. so giving a little bit of additional context there.[98]Steven Sharif
  • A planned feature may allow multiple buildings to be replaced by a single large cosmetic skin.[105]
Cosmetics that are are very large in size- we will have a system that's not been developed yet, but we've been planning for this: we'll have a system where multiple buildings can be occupied space-wise by the larger cosmetic. So, a cosmetic might replace the visual appearance of one particular building, but then you'll be able to have that footprint occupy multiple buildings to replace the visual appearance. So that way you're still utilizing the similar amount of space.[98]Steven Sharif

Ship skins apply to certain ship types.[111]

Mount skins

Monturas are obtained through an early quest that is available to players in starting areas.[113]

  • Fall damage that occurs while mounted will be first applied to the mount; and if the mount dies as a result, then the remaining damage may overflow onto the player, but this will be determined based on testing.[126]
  • There may be emotes associated with mounts and pets, such as petting, hugging, or playing with them.[127]
  • The majority of mounts are based on animals, but there may be some mounts based on inanimate objects in the future.[128]

Pet skins

Cosmetic pets were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.[129]

Costumes

The costume cosmetics that are included in each month's pre-order set are indeed a full piece, and when you put it on it will cover your entire appearance. You will not be able to mix and match/toggle those pieces individually (other than your helmet) when you're wearing the entire costume. This is partially why there is a separate category for accessories - those are able to be worn/equipped on a more individualized basis, so you can mix and match to your liking![131]Sarah Flanagan
